thread Ok weather geeks (ok meepmeep mostly)
We are cycling from Barcelona and are presently near Montpelier... What's likely to be the best source for accurate next day weather forecasts? Are they all going to be roughly as random?

AQ: how can France manage to make everything shut so consistently on a Sunday afternoon.. whilst making it look like enough things will be open in advance.. the organisation involved must be staggering
permalink I used the Accuweather app
in the UK, it's pretty damn good for short term, like a couple of days. The Beeb one has got it consistently wrong for SE19 for the last three days.
permalink I have been recommended this
https://earth.nullscho...

Which is slightly hypnotic
permalink Ah the wind map
is amazing. Obviously you'd have to be a little aware of interpolation in low data areas, but it's an amazing model. Especially being able to see winds at different pressures (~heights)
permalink I am very much enjoying the little swirly bit off the coast of Denmark
permalink That is gorgeous.

permalink You can't search the met office app for places outside UK
but if you're actually there, it gives you a local forecast.
permalink meteoblue
`
permalink windguru
...
permalink all of the above
to give a probabilistic spread across multiple models

if only one, then meteofrance as the domestic forecaster will usually have the best trained model for that country
permalink or throw a D20
and multiply by your magic wind factor
permalink This^^
I'd go with the local met office. e.g. the BOM for Aussie etc etc.
permalink just been ODing on climate change stuff and was just wondering..

pie in the sky type stuff.. but how much capital would you need to start a wind turbine or solar company
big enough to replicate nuclear power stations of energy (whether in the UK/Europe/N.Africa)?
permalink a typical modern reactor would be about 1.5GW
to use UK examples, the station currently being built at Hinkley Point is made of 2 1.6GW reactors, and will receive £92.50/MWh over 30 years, for a total investment of around £25bn

to generate an equivalent amount of peak power you'd need something like the recently-approved Hornsea 2 project (1.4GW) which has 165 8MW turbines and will receive £57.50/MWh over 15 years for a total investment of around £4bn

however, the nukes will produce almost constantly over their lifetime, while the wind farm will operate with an average load factor around 40%, so to produce the equivalent amount of energy to a reactor you'd be looking at something like the 4.8GW Dogger Bank proposal, which will cost something in the order of £10bn (no contract price yet signed)

for an offshore wind site, it's typically around 50/50 upfront capital investment / operational costs
permalink Presumably solar is going to be better if you can buy a nice big chunk of anda
Southern Spain.

And can be generating quicker
permalink yeah for solar you're probably about £3bn for 1.5GW capacity
what you get out of that in terms of energy depends where it is, but North Africa/Southern Spain say about 30% load factor, so £9bn to get a solar array with the equivalent energy output of a nuke.

again I've not really treated capex/opex or levelised cost properly, but this is just to give riggers an indicator of the amount he needs in his piggybank to play with the big boys
permalink I've got a solar panel on my calculator
I'm setting up soltex inovatum inc

Going to be big.
permalink Fancy a JV?
I can double your capacity.
permalink I don't know what this means
but it sounds like an innuendo.
permalink much appreciated and very interesting, thank you
i do find it odd in this atmosphere of brexit that none of those sites are solely owned by the state/UK companies.
the desire for 'sovereignty' obviously doesn't go as far as putting their hands in their pockets..
permalink and there's very few sites
like the Dogger Bank
permalink only because the Crown Estate hasn't yet made many options available
and the government hasn't given a clear policy direction on offshore CfDs yet

we're expecting something like 150GW of projects across the North Sea by 2040, and that's using about 1% of the potential resource
permalink and how much GW does the
UK need?
permalink total electricity demand peaks at around 55GW these days
but that number will potentially be a lot higher when you add EVs and move heat demand from the gas grid to heat pumps

that 150GW is for all the countries around the North Sea, though, not just the UK - and likely that if there is a critical mass of offshore wind in parallel a high voltage subsea grid will develop meaning the same system can be used to dispatch the output wherever it is needed and also increase electricity trade between countries in NW Europe
permalink Assuming that any of the rest of Europe still wants to have anything to do with us, of course...
....
permalink in which case we can cover the sunlit uplands
in PV panels
permalink Genius
Who wants inferior French electricty anyway? It smells funny and goes on strike twice a week.

Proper British megawatts have more watts in than shitty European megawatts, afterall. And they're blue. Proper blue watts!

*asplodes*
permalink I tried some of that French electricity
in my kitchen the other week. Everything tasted of garlic for days.
permalink Oooh we can drop back to a proper 240v instead of that
nonsense 250v the europeans insist upon.
permalink Mostly 220v
Whilst we remain at mostly 240v.

What European voltage harmonisation did was to say everyone had to deliver 230v +10% -6%, which conveniently covered all the voltages in use anyway...
permalink speaking of cycling saw this on aliexpress and thought it might be
useful for inner city riding
https://www.aliexpress...
permalink I'm going to be gentle here
This, and almost every bicycle indicator be they mounted on handlebars, bags, jackets, wristbands, gloves, helmets, sashes or anywhere else are awful and less clear than a hand signal

As an exception, bike-mounted ones for eg one armed cyclists.
permalink Although in the long and ignoble history of such devices
I don't think anyone has sold a buttplug with turn signals for cycling
permalink But no reason why you can't use both.
Although, you'd have to have very fine bum control to trigger a button on a buttplug.
permalink Good point.
Is the buttplug the carrier for the indicators, or the UI?
permalink both
..
permalink If it doesn't vibrate too, I'm not interested.
.....
permalink but I think a driver that didn't see you stick your arm out
is unlikely to notice a flashing back pack.
permalink I think the more options they have to see it
the better the chances
permalink whereas I think the difference it makes
is unmeasurably small.
permalink Day 3 of a manky flu.
Sweats receding but now freezing fucking cold all the time. Ache like a motherfucker from head to toe too, my face is a sea of pain, and the huge hacking cough every 4 minutes is an utter bastard. Also, attention span difficulties are making it hard to concentrate on anything. I keep starting films.
permalink take the cough out of the list
and thats how the first 3 months of pregnancy felt like. Real queasy too, cold shivers through the bones and completely drained. Also couldn't finish a movie at the time.
permalink I'm pretty sure I'm not pregnant.
I went on top last time.
permalink always best to
play safe.
permalink oh and for 3 whole months...
just so you can see how man flu is just pitiful.
